What’s happening with Blue River Nursery Spring 2009?

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

It has been a pretty good growing year so far at the nursery. Sure we had some gray days and that slowed things up. However we did not get a real nasty late freeze like we have had so often in the past ten years. Getting by with a patchy late freeze on May 17 was very nice. The windshield on our truck had the most frost of anything here at the nursery. It has been a blessing to have the flowers back.Right now the Baptesia is absolutely beautiful. Knock out Roses are beautiful. We have settled on the original Knock Out it seems to bloom the longest and have the best looking flowers of all the plants in the series. There are some new varieties of Gallardia, Penstemon, Anemones, and Coral Bells. ‘Rave On’ is a choice Coral Bell with red leaves, silver variegation and striking reddish colored flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds. There is also an excellent selection of Weigela right now. Weigela is wonderful because you can plant it basically everywhere from sun to shade. There are some very attractive light blue colored double petaled Clematis available as well.If you are into Iris come out and check out the reblomming dwarf iris and larger cultivars as well. These cultivars bloom in the fall as well as in the spring. At first I was skeptical. At this point the plants have passed the testPer usual we have an extraordinary collection of dwarf and unusual conifers, Japanese Maples, Funky Beech and Japanese Stewartia. The 10 % off tree sale is still going on. All deciduous trees Japanese Maples, Beech etc are on sale for 10% off. We are overstocked because the owner likes growing trees too much. This is a great time to buy and plant if you lost a tree last winter do to ice damage. Any number of trees purchased over 10 gains an additional 1% off up to 30% for 30 trees. We do not care if you put package purchases together with your friends and neighbors. Just please buy trees and help us get the inventory straightened out!

We couldn't be happier with the landscaping they designed and installed!
